The food industry is getting bigger and better. Experimentation is the key to stay at the top in the industry. But experimentation goes to a whole new level with these 10 bizarre, absolutely weird food trends we’ve seen in 2017. How many of these have you tried or even seen yet?
A soothing cup of butter tea sounds blissful but cheese and tea sounds bizarre. However, the trend that started in countries like China, Taiwan and Malaysia seems to be catching on and has reached the US. The concoction is made of iced tea served with a dollop or sweet or salty cream cheese. While it sounds a little out there, we can only taste and tell.
Picasso on the coffee anyone? Well, now you can have it. For all those who love art and coffee alike, you can ask for a coffee with your favourite painting on it. These coffees are made using food colouring so we’re only guessing how it’ll interfere with the taste of the actual brew. Though we do feel that the makers of these art coffees are great artists themselves for sure.
If you get a meal or a dessert with hues varying from purple, pink, green and blue with sparkles on top you’ve been hit with the unicorn trend. Instagram is flooded with pictures of colourful food and we’re absolutely loving this trend.
Let’s enter the purple world with Ube. It is nothing but a purple yam, a root vegetable native to the Philippines. A restaurant in the US started making desserts with this gorgeous vegetable and the trend just shot up with pancakes, doughnuts and ice creams. While it looks gorgeous, ube is a laxative so try not to overstuff yourself with it.
Freakshakes or fully loaded milkshakes have trended quickly and becoming more and more creative too with pieces of cakes and ice-cream on top. And if you haven’t seen the madness behind the rolled ice cream and donut ice cream sandwiches, you’re missing out on crazy sweet treats.
Pancakes topped with matcha syrup, matcha tea, matcha slushes, matcha ice cream and what not. When matcha started trending it seemed that it’s going to conquer the world with its popularity. It definitely is still conquering the food world but it’s healthy and we completely support its growth.
A childhood delight found at any nook and corner has made its way into the culinary world and how! You’ll find hot chocolate or coffee being poured over a cotton and it will seem like magic. This also sweetens the hot cuppa instead of sugar which is again a plus. You’ll find all the rainbow coloured cotton candies and find them on top of milkshakes too. Bliss!
Gluten free, healthy and absolutely delicious. Zucchini replaces the spaghetti strips and shows the world its versatility. We’re proud of you zucchini.
Rubbing gold flakes on your face for beauty and on idols for worship is a common thing in Malaysia. Putting it over pizza, milkshakes and ice-creams is a first. It does not taste anything like a metal piece so there’s nothing to worry and a little glitter never hurt anyone, right?
Cauliflower Pizza Crust
Another healthy and tasty invention is the cauliflower pizza crust. For those on a diet or those who can’t eat gluten can now enjoy pizza without guilt or a health hazard. All you need to do is mix up mashed cauliflower with eggs, cheese, some herbs and spices and voila, you have yourself a delicious, healthy pizza base!
